aloha!

I’ve only been to Hawaii once before. I was 3 and my mother still dramatically describes how she carried me around the entire time, all the way up to Diamond Head, on Honolulu. I was an oversized baby, the first born daughter to my parents and first grandchild, so I didn’t have much time on my own to figure out the walking, nor do I speak until I was three. Before I opened my big mouth and never shut up, my parents describe me with big brown eyes who would just stare at you, silently judging or internally reciting the preamble. I guess that period of time was my baby self figuring out all that I would eventually say in my grown up years.

We started the trip off by of course arguing about which suitcases to bring. This was going to be a different trip for us because I would be leaving the family early and flying to the opposite side of the world, mid vacation. My mom surprised us with this trip at Christmas, as she had been secretly planning it for months before with the help of my Yiayia. Of course, we can’t keep secrets or surprises, so when I went to the restaurant one day with them, Yiayia let it slip about Hawaii…. How one lets something as big as Hawaii when the conversation is no where near it just amazes me. So, I knew and was excited to be apart of the in-crowd before Christmas. Needless to say, the postcards from Hawaii that my mom gave the family was a good little surprise.

So, we left our humble little home in Branson, Missouri and began our trek out. For me, it was saying goodbye to a normal bed, normal water pressure, and ice for the next month (Europe doesn’t really use ice, water is considered a delicacy). We began in Kansas City, of course, much to my dismay stopping at Big’s favorite place in the world, Buffalo Wild Wings. Okay, ladies and gentlemen, a brief pause to our story. I wish to say that I cannot and will not ever like that place. Don’t get me wrong, I like a good sports bar, but I just don’t understand the awe of the place. Okay, back to our story.

We stayed the night in the hotel by the airport, because our flight to San Diego left incredibly early. I had worked like a crazy person till the day we left, so I was exhausted, and as you know, I’m an old lady already, so I was ready to be in bed asleep at 8pm. However… my sister got me hooked on that show Riverdale (ugh) so I had to watch it all night, right? If you want a mind numbing show that also is overly dramatic and cheesy, it’s the perfect show for you. I stayed up way too late, and 4 am came too quick, and I was lookin’ rough!! Gone are the days I wish to look nice for plane rides. Knowing I was basically signing my death certificate the next month from lack of sleep, I decided to be as comfortable as possible, even at the risk of looking at times like a caveman…. But more on that later on my future post about Greece.

It’s been a few months since I’ve been on a plane, and let me tell ya! It’s gonna be a hot minute before I go back…. I’ve done enough flying for about 100 people. The flights were wonderful, I argued with my sister on who got window seat, I slept with my mouth wide open, most likely snoring, and drank way too much apple juice (it’s my favorite, and I definitely take advantage of it when offered.) Branson to Kansas City, to San Diego, and we FINALLY arrived to the gorgeous, humid, jungle of Hawaii. I slept most of our flights, so I was fully awake, ready to get out of the gross clothes I had worn all day and get on the beach. There was a slight time difference of 5 hours, so we arrived in the middle of the afternoon, so we had the rest of the day to find our condo and unpack, while still giving us time to hit the beach and relax.

So, a little background to my family. It’s my parents goal in life to embarrass me. No problem, I’m fine with that. Not only that, they have a odd talent of finding either the best looking guy who could not be interested in me and get his attention to inform him I’m single. This happens where ever we are. So, starting with the cute guy on the plane to the uber driver, to then any attractive person on the beach, by the end of the trip, everyone in Hawaii knew I was single and ready to mingle, when really, I just wanted to sleep, read, and ignore everyone and everything. Maybe one day their tactics will work.

Hawaii was beautiful, the city was run through, and I felt very much like I was in the new Godzilla movie, the perfect location for a monster to come from the jungle in the mountains to destroy a city full of sky rises to have one last battle scene in the ocean. There were definitely better parts of the city, the beach front area where all the big hotels and shopping centers were, compared to the hundreds of condos shoved not so neatly into old buildings. I was very impressed with the homes built into the mountain sides. The beach front would be perfect weather, but look behind you to the mountains and you could visibly see the storm clouds, a light mist covering the island during different parts of the day, as if we were in a greenhouse and the island was one giant Chia pet.

if you’ve been following me for a while you know I live to be on the beach. I am an island girl, for sure. And you know my love for different bikinis, meaning I bring a different one for each day. It’s fashion, but for the beach. Yeah, I took full advantage doing absolutely nothing for 6 days straight.

blog75:

I walked the beach, I surfed, I read an ungodly amount of books I needed to catch up on, but mostly I slept, I relaxed, I breathed in the salt, and I did a lot of thinking. Of course, regular thinking and vacation thinking are two different things entirely. One is usually overthinking, while other is done in a bikini on the beach with a drink in hand. I don’t mind.

Currently writing this at my kitchen table and getting pretty distracted by this cute face. I’m not even mad.

  1. I’m glad you had a wonderful time, just remember to reflect and think of these positive moments, which you can have anywhere, reflection is the key to a balanced life, something to strive for.
