country roads, take me home

I begin my days like any 22 year old would. It’s the start of fall, a crisp 65 degrees here, so I’m obviously freezing. In my fuzzy winter robe, wrapped up in a blanket, I take my daily cup of hot tea, sit on my porch in my rocking chair, say hello to all of my cute little old neighbors and rock away, enjoying the peace of the morning.

Back in the beginning of September, I had the absolute best weekend away with Josh. It was the end of the quarter for my courses and the also the beginning of almost 2 months where Josh and I won’t see each other till the end of October. A few months ago, Josh asked if we could get away for a weekend, rent a cabin, just the two of us, no dogs, no work, no school, and just be together. Of course I jumped on that idea as quick as possible, already looking up cabins and Airbnb’s we could go to. He booked us the most perfect little place, a cute little wooden cabin in the middle of no where, with no service, where we “roughed it” for the weekend…. with electricity, a perfectly functioning bathroom, kitchen, and quite possibly the most comfortable bed ever?? (with a smart mattress that can move up and down… yes, we were like children when we found the remote and moved the bed up and down and giggled way too hard at it). I am pleased to announce that my boyfriend is just as silly as I am.

Friday: After my beautiful packing and planning skills were in place, and Josh patiently waited for me while I ran around the apartment getting ready to leave, we finally were on our way! I really love the mountains. And I know, I know, I’m an island girl now and love the beach, but gosh, the mountains just take my breath away. As we were driving, we went past a canoe rental place and got the idea to go float the river. We are relatively outdoorsy people, I say moderately. I’m sure we would do fine in case the end of the world happened, but also wouldn’t intentionally go out of our way to be on the show Naked and Afraid…. We both haven’t been floating in years so we were so excited! Literally, I remember rolling over before falling asleep the night before to tell him for the hundredth time how excited I was.

We ended up getting there a bit early so we ended up driving around and doing some sightseeing. Now, if you have ever been in the country, one or two sights is enough to see. We wanted to find spots we could take some self portraits of us. Well, we sure did. Smack dab in the middle of God’s country, we found the most stunning view! We went back to the cabin to officially check in, and get ready for pictures aka Josh putting on a new shirt and him waiting for me to do a complete makeover, and it was off to our gorgeous view! Wow, I do not know how Instagram couples do it, taking photos of themselves all over the world. First off, I’m so used to be in front of the camera, and soak up alllll the attention. Josh on the other hand isn’t used to having pictures taken of himself. So, after sweating to death, meeting a very nice farmer who we nicknamed Neil who showed up with an AR-15 strapped to the front of his 4wheeler, thinking we were going to die, me getting electrocuted from touching a fence (would not recommend, almost died, not cute) we ended up getting some really freaking gorgeous photos!

I love love love to cook and Josh is always down for anything, which I appreciate it. We ate dinner and then, like any young, sweet couple who really like each other would do on a weekend alone in a cabin in the woods… we played UNO. Yep. We got into bed, snuggled up, and played about 30 rounds of UNO. If you ask Josh, he will say he was the champion of it, but between you and I, I am the Queen of UNO.

Queen of UNO

Saturday: adventure! It was GORGEOUS out! I was a full on river girl, very outdoorsy, felt very cool. We headed on down to the river with our coolers and went on our way! We had gotten groceries before so we ended up eating sandwiches and chippies and drank our beers and soaked up the last bit of summer and sunshine we could.

We took a few breaks but lord, the water was cold! It had been raining hard the week before, so it was just a wee bit too cold to stay in for too long. The river was busy but it was nice to be out with other human beings doing their own thing. Josh and I are very okay being in our own little world, and yes, we are all lovey dovey and mushy gushy together and I absolutely love it.

On the ride home we were exhausted!! But, after a big ole dinner (and playing a few rounds of UNO) we ended up getting into bed and completely passing out. We woke back up like an hour or so later and Josh went to build us a fire in the pit out back. First off, if you haven’t ever watched your man build you a fire…. go do it. I’m a sucker for a man who can do really any type of physical activity. Hanging shelves and using a hammer and nails? HOT! Building a fire?! HOT, literally!

We ate s’mores, snuggled up, and giggled about the day, and then I got to see my space loving boyfriend do what he loves to do best, take pictures of the Milky way. To say I was in awe is an understatement. It was a gorgeous night and since our closest neighbor was Neil the farmer, it made for some beautiful photos. I honestly don’t really remember when I fall asleep most of the time but Josh does a good job tucking me in at end of every night.

The next morning, it was time to pack and leave. What did we do? We played a few last rounds of UNO. Then, the long drive back to go pick up our girl Rosie from Josh’s parents and go home. Her and I bonded a lot this past visit and I thinkkkkk she may have accepted me as her mama. Nevertheless, we love our girl!!!!

And as always, the gaps in seeing each other are too long and the visits are too short, but I was so so blessed to spend the weekend away with just us. It was actually what we both needed!

The best weekend.
